Crossing the finish line at the Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon feels surreal, with a glass of wine in hand and cheers all around. I embrace the beauty of the vineyards and the joy of this family trip, even if I missed my goal time by nine minutes.
I have always dreamed of participating in the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon, but every year it sold out before I could secure my spot. Finally, I booked my ticket, planning this as a family adventure to explore world-class wineries while pursuing my goal of running 50 half marathons in 50 states. The anticipation built as I prepared, knowing this would be a mix of running and indulgence, all set against the stunning backdrop of California's wine country.
Arriving at San Francisco Airport, I felt the excitement surge as I picked up my rental car for the drive to Napa. The scenic route offered glimpses of rolling hills and vineyards, setting the perfect tone for the weekend. I headed straight to the running expo at Sonoma Plaza, where the energy buzzed with runners sharing stories and picking up their bibs. After a relaxing lunch at El Dorado Kitchen, I savored the local flavors, eager for the wine tasting at Castello Di Amorosa that followed.

The Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon & Rosé 5K returns this July, bringing excitement to the community.
This race has lingered on my bucket list for years. I aimed to add it to my collection of half marathons across the states, but my plans were thwarted as it sold out time and again. Finally, I seized the opportunity, determined to combine running with family time and the allure of wine tasting. It was the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of Napa Valley while pursuing my running goals.
With the London Marathon in my rearview mirror, I adapted my training plan to fit the Napa race. I maintained a steady weekly mileage of 20-25 miles, incorporating track workouts and strength training to build resilience. The week before the race, I completed my longest run of 12 miles, feeling strong and injury-free. I knew I was ready, but I still held onto the hope that I could break the two-hour barrier.
After settling into my accommodations close to downtown Napa, I was ready for the excitement of race weekend. The expo was organized and lively, filled with runners buzzing about the race. I relished a delicious lunch at El Dorado Kitchen before indulging in an afternoon of wine tasting at Castello Di Amorosa, soaking in the medieval architecture and stunning views. I took an Uber to the starting line at Cuvaison Winery, feeling the thrill of what lay ahead.
Race morning greeted us with perfect weather in the 50s, ideal for running. The start line at Cuvaison Winery buzzed with energy, with hot air balloons floating overhead, setting a magical scene. The first challenge was the hill next to Domaine Carneros, which tested my resolve early on. As I settled into my pace, the breathtaking views of vineyards and the warm smiles from families at the water stations kept my spirits high. The well-organized hydration stations, complete with wet towels, were a blessing as the sun began to rise. Crossing the finish line, I was met with cheers and the promise of a wine festival that awaited us. I enjoyed two and a half hours sampling wines from over 30 wineries, a perfect end to a memorable race experience.
